The story of Rooibos (Red Bush) tea is a unique and extremely interesting one - a story that started at the turn of the century in the Cedarberg area of the Cape. It was the locals of the area who first discovered that the fine, needle-like leaves of the "Aspalathus Linearis" plant made a tasty, aromatic tea. It was they who first harvested the wild-growing plants, chopped and then bruised them, leaving them to ferment in heaps, before drying them in the sun. Today the methods are more mechanized and refined.

As a herbal remedy forming part of their cultural heritage, buchu was introduced to early colonists by Khoi pastoralists. Traditionally used as a household medicine for stomach and bladder disorders, gout and the treatment of wounds, it was steeped in brandy for internal use as the famous buchu brandy or ‘boegoebrandewyn’ and in vinegar for external use as ‘boegoeasyn’. Buchu soon made its appearance in Europe, where it was officially listed as a medicine in the British Pharmacopoeia in 1821. From there it found its way to the United States, where by the mid-nineteenth entury it had become a popular medicine for the treatment of urinary ailments. Not all shipments reached its shores however, with a number of bales of buchu having being listed in the cargo manifest of the RMS Titanic. As a herbal medicine buchu is used today in various forms including tinctures and teas for urinary tract ailmaents, cystitis and prostates, and a mild diuretic. Buchu oil is used as a natural flavour enchancer in foods and beverages with a blackcurrant flavour. It is also a commonly used ingredient in perfumery.
